Stewart nets 30

BALTIMORE, Md. – Johns Hopkins, ranked 18th in the latest d3hoops.com poll, finished the game on an 8-2 run to down McDaniel 65-59 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Tuesday.

Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) led the Green Terror (11-6, 6-5 CC) with a career-high 30 points for the program's first 30-point game since 2013.

Jimmy Hammer led the Blue Jays (16-2, 10-1 CC) to their program record-tying 13th straight win with 19 points.

After Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) drained a 3-pointer from the left wing with 2:37 to play to tie the game at 57-all, the teams traded possessions without any points.

Omar Randall pulled up for a 17-foter from the right wing to put Johns Hopkins in front 59-57 with 1:42 showing.

The Blue Jays completed their 27 of 29 showing from the charity stripe with a 6-for-6 showing in the final minute to seal the win.

Behind eight points from Stewart, McDaniel used a 10-0 run to build a 12-3 lead through the game's first 6:19.

George Bugarinovic snapped an 0-for-9 start to the game for Johns Hopkins, putting back a missed shot to close the deficit to 12-5 with 11:57 on the clock.

A Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) three-point play extended the Green Terror's lead to 25-15 with 6:07 on the clock.

Another four Blue Jay free throws helped close the deficit to 25-21 with 3:59 showing before McDaniel extended the lead back to 35-25 at the break on a Stewart layup just before the buzzer.

The Blue Jays scored 11 of the first 13 points in the second half to take a 36-34 lead on the first of Hammer's three triples with 15:45 on the clock.

Johns Hopkins built a lead as large as six on two Austin Vasiliadis free throws with 9:10 to play for a 48-42 advantage but McDaniel scored seven straight points for a 49-48 edge just 2:20 later.

Echols finished with eight points. Stewart and Merlo led the way on the glass with seven rebounds. Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) chipped in four points and three steals.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
