WESTMINSTER, Md. – St. Mary's (Md.) won five of the six singles matches to take a 7-2 victory over McDaniel in the first women's tennis action of the fall for both teams on Sunday.
Laura Pollard (Federalsburg, Md./Colonel Richardson) and Winsome Schauer (Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School) took No. 2 doubles for the Green Terror (0-1), winning 8-4.
Emily Stumpfig led the Seahawks (1-0) with a 2-0 day, including teaming with Shannon Ramsey for a 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles, taking the tiebreaker, 9-7.
Stumpfig won in straight sets at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2 while Ramsey needed three sets at No. 1 singles to complete a 2-0 day.
Ramsey dropped a 7-5 decision to Maddy Simmons (Bowie, Md./Bowie) before forcing a super-tiebreaker with a 6-1 victory. Ramsey prevailed in the tiebreak, 10-8.
Dana Waskiewicz (Abington, Md./Harford Technical) added a singles win for McDaniel, taking sixth singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Green Terror returns to action at Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday. Match time is 1:30 p.m.
