Box Score HARRISBURG, Pa. – McDaniel put together a 16-4 run early in the first half to turn an early four-point deficit into a 17-9 lead en route to an 82-60 victory over CCNY in the championship game of the 2014 Penn State-Harrisburg Tipoff Tournament in men's basketball action on Sunday.
Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) tallied 20 points to lead the Green Terror (2-0) to its first 2-0 start since opening the 2007-08 season – head coach Kevin Curley's debut season – with a 6-0 mark. Stewart was joined by Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) on the all-tournament team.
Khalil Hamer led the Beavers (1-1) with 21 points.
Five points from Hamer keyed a 5-1 start to the game for CCNY before an Echols layup and Nic Martin (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) layup in transition evened the game at 5-all.
After Anthony Lewis and Stewart traded baskets, Echols and Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) each hit jumpers to key a 10-2 stretch that opened up an eight-point lead with 13:06 showing in the first half.
A Lewis layup closed the deficit to 23-19 but an Echols steal-and-layup ignited an 8-0 run that put McDaniel in front 31-19 with 4:22 to play in the opening stanza.
Trailing 40-28 at halftime, Manfred Cadet converted a three-point play on the Beavers' first possession of the second half to cut the deficit to single digits but a Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) layup sparked another 8-0 burst that stretched the lead to 17 with 17:49 showing.
Back-to-back triples from Brooks stretched the lead to 59-37 with 13:57 on the clock.
An Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) 3-pointer gave the Green Terror its largest lead at 72-44 with 9:23 showing en route to the 22-point win.
Brooks finished with 11 points while Merlo and Anthony Morgan (York, Pa./New Hope Academy Charter) each chipped in 10 points off the bench.
McDaniel shot 66 percent from the floor for the game, including connecting on 6 of 14 attempts from long range.
The Green Terror opens the Centennial Conference schedule at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
