GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) threw the hammer a distance of 37.72 meters to set a new program-best mark and lead McDaniel at the 2013 Mason-Dixon Invitational hosted by Gettysburg in men's outdoor track and field action on Saturday.
Hernandez's throw of 123-9 was 9 feet, 5 inches further than Dave Hose's previous program record and finishing eighth in the event.
As a team, the Green Terror finished 10th with 21 points. Mary Washington won the 14-team meet with 162 points.
Hernandez was also fifth in the shot put with a toss of 13.75 meters and was ninth in the discus, throwing 36.43 meters for Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying marks in both events.
Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) was ninth in the shot put with a conference-qualifying throw of 11.83 meters.
Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) turned in a CC-qualifying throw of 32.30 meters in the discus to finish 21st.
Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methaction) and Andy Gilford (Westminster, Md./Westminster) finished 5-6 in the javelin, throwing CC-qualifying distances of 43.82 and 42.53, respectively.
On the track, Arthur Williams (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) led the way with a fifth-place showing in the 100. He was fifth in the prelims with a time of 11.95 seconds before posting a time of 11.68 in the finals.
Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) turned in an eighth-place showing in the mile with a time of 4:40.71 and placed ninth in the 800 with a conference-qualifying time of 2:01.25.
Colin LaPenta (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) joined Merkel with a conference qualifier in the 800, finishing 20th with a time of 2:06.86..
Williams and Dunn joined Carlos Thomas (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and James Ways (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) on the 4x100-meter relay, finishing fifth with a time of 46.88 seconds.
The Green Terror concludes the season at the CC championship hosted by Ursinus on Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5.
