Nichols leads McDaniel at Millersville with career best in decathlon
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) finished fifth in the decathlon to lead McDaniel at the Millersville Metrics in men's outdoor track and field action on Saturday and Sunday.
The junior notched the Green Terror's top individual finish with a personal-best score of 5041 at the non-scoring meet.
Nichols best placefinish came in the final event, where he turned in a personal-best time of 4:52.14 to finish third in the 1,500. He finished fourth in the 400 (53.54 seconds) and javelin (39.02 meters)
Ken Polk (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur), Fonati Quinn (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery), Trevor Crest (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal) and Juris Eyler (Middletown, Md./Middletown) combined to record a fourth-place showing in the 4x100-meter relay, registering a time of 45.21.
Quinn added the top single-event individual finish for McDaniel, placing fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.45 meters. Polk added a top-10 showing in the same event, leaping 11.90 meters to earn the squad a pair of Centennial Conference (CC) in the event.
Quinn added a second qualifier, finishing 11th in the long jump with a distance of 6.03 meters.
Eyler hit a pair of CC marks in the sprints, finishing 11th in the 400 (51.11 seconds) and 24th in the 100 (11.95).
The Green Terror added a pair of 14th-place showing in the two hurdles events. Eric Spioch (Westminster, Md./Westminster) hit the CC mark with a time of 18.88 seconds in the 110 while Rick Gonzalez (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) posted a CC-qualifying time of 1:00.48 in the 400.
Jake Zamostny (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) rounded out the qualifiers on the track with a 23rd-place showing in the 800 (2:00.64).
Nate Bell (Union Bridge, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished 15th in the discus, hitting the CC mark at 35.79 meters while Eric Klugh (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) was 16th in the javelin with a hurl of 46.87.
Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) qualified in both throws, finishing 18th in the javelin (42.38) and 20th in the discus (32.39).
Ron Shriver (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) added a top-10 showing in his debut in the steeplechase, finishing ninth in a time of 11:38.61.
The Green Terror returns to action at its own Twilight Meet on Wednesday. Action begins at 4 p.m.
