Goldberg cans six treys as part of 26-point outburst

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ian Goldberg netted a game-high 26 points, including hitting all six of his team's six 3-pointers in Haverford's 77-68 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.

Sam Permutt added 20 points for the Fords (11-9, 8-6 CC), who shot 59.6 percent from the floor in the game – the highest field-goal percentage allowed by the Green Terror (11-10, 8-6 CC) since Ursinus lit the squad up for 62.8 percent on Jan. 12, 2008.

Cullen Murray-Kemp (Trappe, Md./Easton) and Devon Lesniak (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led McDaniel with 18 points each. Murray-Kemp added nine rebounds while Lesniak dished out five assists.

Tied at 56-all on a Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) three-point play with 6:17 to play, Goldberg nailed a 3-pointer on Haverford's next possession to spark a game-clinching 11-0 run.

Goldberg canned three of his triples during the 2-minute, 3-second burst while Bo Friddell added a steal-and-layup to account for the run.

Michael Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana), who finished with nine points on three 3-pointers, hit a trey to halt the run with 3:24 on the clock but neither team scored for the next nearly two minutes until Friddell sank a pair of free throws with 1:42 to play to push the lead back to double figures.

A 10-for-12 showing from the charity stripe from that point on allowed the Fords to seal the victory, earning the season split and forging a three-way tie in the conference standings at 8-6. The trio, which includes McDaniel and Gettysburg, sits in fourth place one-half game behind Muhlenberg, which had its game at conference-leading Franklin & Marshall postponed until Sunday.

Permutt staked Haverford to a 5-0 lead in the game's first 1:24. A Lesniak triple and Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) layup helped the Green Terror overcome a 7-2 deficit to knot the game at 7-all with 15:33 showing.

Tied at 9-all after Permutt and Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) exchanged buckets, Cam Baker hit a jumper with 13:51 on the clock to spark an 8-0 burst over the next 3:14.

A Brett Cohen layup stretched the first-half lead to as large as 30-18 with 4:37 showing but McDaniel – behind 11 points from Murray-Kemp – pulled within 35-30 at the half and used a 20-7 run that spanned both halves to take its first lead at 38-37 with 15:33 to play in the contest.

After Murray-Kemp's basket-and-free throw, Baker responded with back-to-back baskets to put the visitors back on top by three.

However, Lesniak drained two of his five 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to give the hosts a 44-41 lead with 12:31 remaining.

Two Permutt jumpers put Haverford back on top by one before Rudd swished a 3-pointer for a 47-45 Green Terror advantage.

A Coehn layup with 10:27 showing and a Baker layup with 8:51 to play turned the two-point deficit into a two-point advantage before Lesniak gave McDaniel its final lead of the game with a 3-pointer at the 8:35 mark.

A Permutt three-point play returned the advantage to the Fords before Lesniak hit the second of two free throws to make it a one-point game with 7:56 showing.

Permutt and Marcus Dyson (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union Catholic) exchanged baskets before Cohen stretched the lead to 56-53 with 6:51 on the clock.

Rudd finished with 11 points and a season-high eight rebounds. Jarboe added five assists and five rebounds to his nine points.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
