Box Score Garnet notches 62-51 win to hand McDaniel eighth straight
loss
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Will Gates and Matt
Allen combined for more than half of Swarthmore's points
in a 62-51 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC)
men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Gates and Allen each tallied 17 points for the Garnet (7-17,
6-11 CC), who notched its first road win since an 83-78 win at
Washington (Md.) on Jan. 24, 2007.
Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) led
the Green Terror (8-16, 4-13 CC) with 13 points while
Marcus Dyson (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union Catholic)
added 11 points and seven rebounds in the team's eighth straight
loss.
Knotted at 26-all at the break, Jordan Martinez
hit a jumper in the paint on Swarthmore's first possession of the
second half and the Garnet never trailed.
Dyson responded with a jumper at the 19:26 mark to even the game
at 28-all but a Martinez triple put the visitors on top to stay.
Two Michael Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) free
throws pulled the hosts within one but a Martinez free throw and
Ryan Carmichael 3-pointer pushed the lead to five.
Baskets from Butler and Dyson once again sliced the deficit to
one but a 15-6 stretch that was bookended by two of Allen's four
treys gave the Garnet a 10-point advantage with 6:10 to play.
Back-to-back baskets from Dyson trimmed the deficit to 50-44 but
the Green Terror could get no closer.
Four straight points that included three from Butler gave
McDaniel a 12-7 lead with 10:15 remaining in the first half before
a Gates jumper made it a three-point game at the 8:58 mark.
A Butler three-point play and Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie,
Md./Glen Burnie) 3-pointer gave the Green Terror its
largest lead at 18-9 just 47 seconds later.
Trailing 20-11 a minute later, Swarthmore reeled off 11 of the
game's next 13 points to even the game on back-to-back Allen
triples.
Rudd, making his second consecutive start, added seven points
and a career-high nine rebounds.
