Box Score Garnet takes first victory over McDaniel since 2007
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Will Gates recorded a
double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Swarthmore to
a 60-48 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's
basketball action on Wednesday.
Marcus Dyson (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union
Catholic) netted 14 points to lead the Green Terror (8-9,
4-6 CC), who also got 10 points from Miguel Jones
(Baltimore, Md./North County).
Matt Allen added 14 points for the Garnet
(5-13, 4-7 CC) while Eugene Prymak added 10.
After Danny Walker momentarily stretched the
lead back back to five, Jones and Max Keenan (Washington,
D.C./Georgetown Day School) hit consecutive 3-pointers to
give McDaniel a 40-39 advantage.
An Allen layup on the break and two Prymak free
throws gave the hosts a 43-40 lead with 5:55 on the clock.
A Gates trey made it a six-point advantage with 4:24 to play
before a Keenan free throw and Jones layup trimmed the deficit to
three once again.
Four straight free throws gave Swarthmore a 52-43 lead before
Keenan canned his second triple to slice the lead to six with 1:19
showing.
An 8-for-10 showing from the line in the final 1:15 sealed the
win for the Garnet.
Behind four points from Gates, Swarthmore built a 9-4 lead with
13:19 remaining in the first half before McDaniel tallied 10 of the
game's next 13 points behind five points from Marcus Dyson
(Scotch Plains, N.J./Union Catholic).
A Karl Nelson (Owings Mills, Md./Park School of
Baltimore) jumper gave the Green Terror a 16-14 lead with
10:15 on the clock but the squad would not score again until a
Jones free throw 4:12 later.
In the meantime, the Garnet put together a stretch of six
straight points to takes its largest lead.
Three straight points from Dyson tied the game at 20 with 3:37
on the clock.
A Steve Wilson (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon)
14-foot jumper with 1:01showing gave McDaniel a 25-24 lead at the
intermission.
A Jordan Martinez short jumper with 14:02 to
play stretched the Garnet advantage to seven, capping an 11-3 burst
to start the second half and force a Green Terror timeout.
An Allen 17-footer 49 seconds later pushed to lead to its
largest at 37-28 before a Dyson layup and two driving layups from
Jones sliced the deficit to three with 10:11 to play.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Muhlenberg on
Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
