YORK, Pa. – Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North
County) netted 13 points, including the game-winning
basket to lead McDaniel to a 49-48non-conference men's
basketball victory over Penn State-Behrend in the championship game
of the 2009 Hampton Inn Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at York (Pa.) on
Sunday.
Adam Potter led the Lions (6-4) with a game-high
20 points.
Chad Arrington (Randallstown,
Md./Randallstown) was named the tournament most valuable
player, joining Jones on the all-tournament for the Green Terror
(6-3), who overcame an eight-point deficit to win in the waning
seconds.
Inbounding after a timeout with 30.3 seconds on the clock, Potter
was fouled in the lane with 22.3 seconds on the clock. After
hitting both free throws, McDaniel drove the length of the court
where Jones hit a floater from the right side of the rim with 8.1
seconds on the clock and then forced a turnover on the other end to
preserve the victory.
Trailing 9-8 after a Josh McKay (Baltimore, Md./Eastern
Tech) layup with 15:40 on the clock, Drew
Seker hit a layup 20 seconds later to give Behrend the
lead.
The Lions stretched the advantage to 18-9 over the next 5 minutes,
31 seconds behind four points each from Potter and Chris
Saltsman.
A Miguel Jones (Baltimore, Md./North County) layup
on the break snapped an 8-minute, 36-second scoring drought for
McDaniel before Potter hit the first of two free throws on
Behrend's next possession to push the lead back to
eight.
Back-to-back baskets from Louis Sarris-Grau (Huntingdon
Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) trimmed the deficit to 21-18
with just over a minute remaining in the first half before
Tom Newman and Ryan Finch (Flemington,
N.J./Hunterdon) traded treys in the final 44 seconds to
send the Lions to the locker room with a three-point
advantage.
A McKay jumper and single Arrington free throw knotted the game at
24 at the 17:06 mark of the second half.
Eight straight points from Behrend pushed the Lions' lead
back to eight just 2 minutes, 42 seconds later.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jones 1:31 apart kotted the game at 37
with 9:54 to play before a Joseph Potucek (Germantown,
Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) free throw and
T.J. Odunlami (Columbia, Md./Atholton)
steal-and-layup gave the Green Terror a 40-37 lead.
Trailing 45-43 with 2:51 to play, Potterconverted 3 of 4 free
throws to give his team a 46-43 lead.
Henry hit an elbow jumper with 1:34 to play to put McDaniel back in
front by one, setting up the final minute dramatics.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
