Charlie Olson each scored as the McDaniel College men's soccer team opened Centennial Conference play with a 2-1 win over Washington College Saturday at the Soccer Complex.
The Green Terror (5-0-1, 1-0 CC) remained unbeaten in six games this season, including five at home. The team is now 15-4-3 at home the last three seasons.
McDaniel is also unbeaten in its last four conference openers, improving to 3-0-1.
The team's two leading scorers, Clarke and Olson have combined for 10 goals, five assists, and 25 points through six games and have also won both Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week awards this season.
The two teams combined for just seven shots in the opening 45 minutes and the game was scoreless until the 31st minute when Clarke netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from junior
Jack Guerrera who picked up his sixth career point, including first this season.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Shoremen (1-2-4, 0-1 CC) ramped up the offensive pressure in the second half, out-shooting the Green Terror, 15-2. Three of their four shots on goal were turned away by first-year
Gavin Yartymyk, including two in the first 13 minutes.
The visitors hit the crossbar twice in the last 13 minutes while Olson struck for his fifth goal of the season on a 2-on-1 breakaway with Clarke against Washington goalkeeper Hannes Budde.
The Shoremen finally broke through with just 47 seconds remaining on their 18th and final shot of the game, but it wasn't enough as McDaniel extended its unbeaten streak to three in the series.
Yartymyk finished with three second-half saves to remain unbeaten in four career starts.
After playing five of their first six games at home, the Green Terror begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy for a 7 p.m. kickoff with the Griffins.
