GRANTHAM, Pa. - Messiah scored two goals on nine first-half shots as the ninth-ranked Falcons posted a 2-1 non-conference victory over the McDaniel College women's soccer team Wednesday on Shoemaker Field.
The Green Terror (3-1-2), who were receiving votes in Tuesday's Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Organization for Coaches Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, suffered their first loss in six games this season, allowing their first goal since the season opener at York (Pa.) on September 1.
Sophomore
Alaina Miller scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 55th minute as she now has points in four out of six games this season.
Messiah (2-1-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with the game's first goal in the 21st minute. The hosts doubled their advantage with their second goal on their eighth shot of the half in the 38th minute.
The Falcons held a 9-1 margin in shots in the first half and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore
Sierra Ruehl made two saves in the opening 45 minutes while the McDaniel also had a team save on Messiah's first shot of the game less than six minutes in.
Ruehl added four more saves in the second half as the visitors looked to make a comeback. Miller's goal cut their deficit in half and was the team's first in the last three meetings against Messiah, ending a scoreless of just over 234 minutes.
First-year
Hariette Ngwatung picked up an assist on the goal as the team's top two scorers connected on a goal for the fourth time this season. The duo has had a hand in all but one of the team's nine goals this season.
The Falcons had 14 shots in the second half, but just four on goal. They also totaled eight corner kicks.
McDaniel opens Centennial Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Bryn Mawr at the Soccer Complex beginning at noon.
