BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomore
Nicholas Clarke scored both goals, including the game-winner in the 77th minute as the McDaniel College men's soccer team defeated in-state rival Goucher, 2-1 Wednesday at Beldon Field.
The Green Terror (4-0-1) extended their unbeaten streak to five and picked up their first win in their first road game this season.
Clarke scored his team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season. It was his second multi-goal game of the season after he also netted both goals in a 2-1 win over Penn State Harrisburg in the season opener on September 1. He has now scored at least one goal in three of the team's five games this season.
Clarke scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute off an assist from senior
Charlie Olson. It marked the first time that the team's two leading scorers have connected on a goal this season. Both have totaled 10 points through five games and both have earned the two Centennial Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week awards handed out this year.
With the exception of Sunday's scoreless tie with Methodist, McDaniel has scored the game's first goal in each of the other four games this season.
The visitors maintained their 1-0 lead into halftime after holding a 5-1 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Gophers (3-1-2), who suffered their first loss in six games, tied the game in the 55th minute on Tim Bonilla before Dino Gesamondo kept it tied with a save on a penalty kick by Olson just over one minute later.
Gesamondo made five of his seven saves in the second half, but Clarke was able to find the back of the net for the second time in the 77th minute to give the Green Terror their first road win.
First-year
Gavin Yartymyk made his lone save in the 55th minute before Goucher struck for its lone goal. He remained unbeaten in four starts this season with a 3-0-1 record.
McDaniel opens Centennial Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Washington College at the Soccer Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
