Baseball Beats No. 18 Gettysburg 12-7 for Third-Straight Win

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior Ben Davis collected three RBIs and junior Shea McKenna scored four runs to lead the McDaniel College baseball team to a 12-7 rain-shortened win over No. 18 Gettysburg on Tuesday.

The win was the third-in-a-row for the Green Terror (23-10, 6-5 CC), who now have won five of the last six match-ups with the Bullets including last season's Centennial Conference tournament game at Preston Field.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when Davis drove in McKenna on a sacrifice fly to lead 1-0. Five runs came across to score in the fourth for the Green Terror, beginning with a bases-loaded walk to junior Patrick Kelly that scored junior DJ Stolba for a 2-0 lead.

McKenna then hit a two-run double to left field to score junior Ethan Haddock and sophomore Austin Sealing. Kelly scored after Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and sophomore Anthony Cerone drove in McKenna on an RBI-groundout to make the score 6-0 after four.

The Bullets (24-7, 7-4 CC), who are ranked at No. 18 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25, answered with four runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit down to two, 6-4. McDaniel then put four runs of its own on the board in the bottom half, first with a solo home run from Sealing and then with a two-run double from sophomore Thomas Mezzullo.

Davis drove in Mezzullo with an RBI-single to make the score 10-4.

Gettysburg scored three runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI-double and a two-run homer, but the Green Terror again answered with a two-spot in the bottom half. McKenna scored his fourth run of the day on a wild pitch and Cerone drove in Mezzullo on an RBI-groundout for a 12-7 lead. The game was called after the seventh inning due to lightning.

Davis led the team with three RBIs on the day while Mezzullo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. McKenna had two hits with two RBIs and four runs while Cerone went 1-for-5 with two RBIs. Sealing had a home run and a run scored in the win and Haddock had a two-hit day at the plate.

Senior Tyson Nercessian earned the win in relief, pitching two innings in relief and recording two strikeouts, two walks, two earned runs and four hits allowed on 52 pitches. First-year Luke Wood got the start, totaling four strikeouts and four walks while allowing four runs on only one hit.

The Green Terror complete the home-and-home with the Bullets on Friday in Gettysburg, Pa. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
