Ben Davis each had three RBIs to lead the McDaniel College baseball team to a 9-4 win over No. 18 Gettysburg to sweep a home-and-home series.
The win propelled the Green Terror (24-10, 7-5) into second place in the Centennial Conference standings with a week remaining in the regular season, now possessing the tiebreaker over the Bullets (24-8, 7-5). The team notched its third win of the season over a ranked opponent, following a win over No. 4 Salisbury on March 19 and Tuesday's home win over Gettysburg.
The Bullets struck first with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to go ahead 1-0, but the Green Terror rallied in the third with a four-run frame. Daly tied the game with an RBI-single that scored junior
Ethan Haddock, and an RBI-single from sophomore
Thomas Mezzullo gave McDaniel a 2-1 lead. Davis followed with another RBI-single and junior
Shea McKenna reached on a fielder's choice that scored Mezzullo for a 4-1 advantage.
A bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning scored junior
Quinn Dean for a 5-1 lead. Gettysburg scored twice in the fifth on an RBI-double and an RBI-single to cut the deficit to 5-3 after five.
Davis added onto the Green Terror lead with an RBI-single in the sixth scoring Daly to make the score 6-3. Haddock later scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to move in front 7-3. The Bullets tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh but McDaniel answered in the ninth with a two-run single from Daly that scored Haddock and Dean for the game's final 9-4 tally.
Daly and Davis each finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs apiece, while Daly scored three runs from the leadoff spot. Mezzullo had a three-hit day in six plate appearances while Dean tied a career-high with three base hits. Haddock went 2-for-4 with three runs scored while McKenna had a base hit and an RBI.
First-year
Alex Von Behren earned his second win of the season, pitching four innings in relief and totaling one strikeout, two walks, two earned runs and four hits on 76 pitches. Sophomore
Preston Yost got the start, tossing three innings and walking four batters while allowing one earned run on two hits.
The Green Terror return to Preston Field on Saturday for a home doubleheader with Muhlenberg. First pitch is set for 12 pm.
