McKenna Leads in Series-Opening Win over Westfield State

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Junior Shea McKenna collected two hits and a team-high three RBIs to lead the McDaniel College baseball team to a 9-4 win over Westfield State in the opener of a three-game weekend series on Saturday.

The Green Terror (5-3) earned their fifth-consecutive win in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. 

Graduate Student Shane Daly sent a double into right field to score junior DJ Stolba for the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning. The Owls (0-4) responded in the fourth with two runs in the top half to take the lead, tacking on another run in the fifth on an RBI single to make the score 3-1.

The Green Terror scored six runs in the fifth to retake the lead. McKenna tied the game at 3-3 on a two-run double to score Daly and junior Ethan HaddockSophomore Maximus Mullins followed with another two-run double to put the Green Terror ahead by two, and sophomore Henry Novario added on with another two-run double. 

Davis and McKenna scored the eighth ninth runs of the opener on RBI doubles in the sixth inning, and an RBI single from the Owls in the seventh concluded the scoring.

McKenna finished the day 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored while Mullins totaled two hits and two RBIs in four plate appearances. Novario added a two-run double while Daly had a two-hit day with an RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Tyson Nercessian earned the win in relief, pitching 4.1 innings while striking out two and allowing only one earned run. First year Luke Wood got the start, totaling five strikeouts and two walks while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

The Green Terror return to Preston Field tomorrow to conclude the weekend series with the Owls in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11 am.
