Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with Westfield State

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The McDaniel College baseball team split a doubleheader with Westfield State on Sunday to conclude a three-game series from Preston Field.

The Green Terror (6-4) erased a 6-1 deficit with a five-run seventh inning before falling in extras to the Owls in the opener.

Game 1: Westfield State 8, McDaniel 6

The Owls (1-5) struck first with two runs in the first inning, but McDaniel responded by scoring on a fielder's choice to send sophomore Henry Novario home, making the score 2-1 in the fourth.

An RBI-double and an RBI-single plated two more runs for Westfield State in the sixth and two more came across in the seventh for a 6-1 lead for the visitors.

The Green Terror scored five runs in the bottom half of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The rally began with a bases-loaded single from sophomore Maximus Mullins to score graduate student Shane Daly, followed by a fielder's choice that scored senior Ben Davis.

Sophomore Cameron Simon scored sophomore Thomas Mezzullo on an RBI-single to make the score 6-4 and a bases-loaded walk sent Mullins home to draw McDaniel to within one. Junior Ethan Haddock hit a sacrifice fly into right field to score Novario, tying the contest at 6-6.

The Owls opened the extra frame with an RBI-double into left center field, scoring two runs and retired the Green Terror in order in the bottom half to pick up their first win.

Mullins went 2-for-3 with an RBI, run scored, and a walk while Haddock led the team with two RBIs. Novario scored two runs and Davis had two hits. Mullins, Novario, Simon, and junior DJ Stolba all finished with one RBI in the loss.

First year Gabriel Chapman took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits. Sophomore Brady Harach got the start, totaling five innings, two strikeouts, two walks, two hits, and two earned runs.

Game 2: McDaniel 12, Westfield State 4

McDaniel used a five-run sixth inning to pull away from the Owls and win game two.

An RBI-double plated the first run of the late game for the Owls in the first inning, but the Green Terror responded with three runs in the bottom half. An RBI-single from Mullins and two-bases loaded walks scoring Mullins and Novario gave McDaniel a 3-1 lead after one.

Westfield State answered in the second with a pair of RBI-singles, scoring three runs to retake the lead, 4-3.

An RBI-ground out from junior Shea McKenna in the bottom half tied the game at 4-4.

The game remained tied until the fifth inning when the Green Terror exploded for six runs to take control. Novario smacked an RBI-single up the middle to score McKenna and Simon drew a bases-loaded walk to score Novario.

Two more runs scored on a single from Daly, and a two-run double by Davis scored Daly and Simon to make the score 10-4.

A two-run single from sophomore Anthony Cerone in the sixth scored the game's final two runs to stamp a 12-4 win for the Green Terror in the series finale.

Cerone finished the game with a career-high three RBIs while Daly had a three-hit performance, totaling two RBIs, and three runs scored. Davis had two RBIs and two walks while McKenna, Mullins, Novario, Simon and first year Brayden Simpson all collected RBIs in the win.
