Davis Homers Twice, Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior Ben Davis hit two home runs and totaled six RBIs to lead the McDaniel College baseball team to a doubleheader split with Haverford to open Centennial Conference play on Saturday.

Davis homered for the fourth time in six games for the Green Terror (18-6, 1-1), who dropped the opener to the Fords (7-11, 1-1) after a late-innings rally.

Game 1: Haverford 11, McDaniel 5

The Fords struck early in the first inning with a solo homer, adding four runs in the second inning and five runs in the third to take a 10-0 lead, highlighted by a three-run homer in the third.
Graduate Student Shane Daly got the Green Terror on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, his sixth home run of the season. Davis then led off the sixth inning with another solo shot, and junior Ethan Haddock drove in sophomore Thomas Mezzullo on an RBI-single to draw within seven.

Davis hit an RBI-double to score senior Brady Goyne in the seventh and Mezzullo reached on an error to allow Davis to score to cut the deficit to five, but Haverford added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 11-5 win.

Davis had a two-hit day at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored while Haddock and sophomore Anthony Ceronealso had two base hits in the opener. Daly had a hit in four plate appearances with a run scored and a walk while Goyne had a base hit and scored a run.

First-year Luke Wood took his first loss of the season, allowing six earned runs on four hits while striking out two and walking four. Junior Ryan Buecker pitched five innings in relief and totaled two strikeouts, one earned run and six hits allowed.

The Green Terror rebounded with a 13-3 win in game two, highlighted by a ten-run sixth inning.

Game 2: McDaniel 13, Haverford 3

Haverford broke through in the third inning with a two-run frame but Cerone answered in the fourth with a two-run single to score Davis and junior Shea McKenna to tie the game, 2-2. Daly broke the tie in the fifth with an RBI-single to score junior DJ Stolba but the Fords responded with a leadoff solo home run to again tie the game at 3-3.

The Green Terror then plated 10 runs in the sixth to take control of the game. Davis led off the inning with a solo homer for his second home run of the doubleheader, his fourth round-tripper in six games. McKenna scored after junior Patrick Kelly was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Goyne added another run by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Stolba then scored on a wild pitch for a 7-3 lead and Davis sent a three-run triple into center field for a 10-3 lead. Mezzullo homered into left field to cap off the 10-run frame.

Davis went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored while Mezzullo and Cerone each added two RBIs in the win. Stolba had two base hits and scored twice while Daly, Goyne and Kelly all finished with an RBI.

Junior Jake Young picked up his second win of the season in relief, pitching three innings and totaling six strikeouts and three walks without allowing an earned run on 63 pitches. First-year Jack Kinsey got the start, totaling one strikeout, four walks and three earned runs in four innings.

The Green Terror travel to Chestertown, Md. On Tuesday to battle Washington College to open a conference home-and-home. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
