WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior
Ben Davis went 7-for-10 with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs as the McDaniel College baseball team extended its win streak to nine with a doubleheader sweep over Notre Dame (MD) at home.
Davis, the program's all-time home run leader, hit his first of the season for the Green Terror (15-5) in a 16-0 win in the opener over the Gators (3-14).
Game 1: McDaniel 16, Notre Dame (MD) 0
Davis opened the scoring with an RBI-double in the first inning, scoring graduate student
Shane Daly to take a 1-0 lead. Junior
Ethan Haddock then connected on his first homer of the season to begin a seven-run second inning. Davis drove in junior
Patrick Kelly on an RBI-single to make the score 4-0, and a fielder's choice scored Daly for a 5-0 lead. Sophomore
Thomas Mezzullo hit an RBI-single to score Davis and first-year
Jack Morin drilled a two-run single to make the score 8-0 after two.
Three more runs came across to score in the fourth, as junior
Shea McKenna scored on a throwing error, Haddock sent an RBI-triple into center field to score Morin and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Green Terror an 11-0 cushion. McDaniel scored again in the fifth and sixth innings before Davis hammered a three-run homer over the right field fence for the 16-0 final margin.
Davis finished 4-of-5 in the opener with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Haddock homered and tripled in three at-bats, collecting three RBIs in the win. Morin went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Mezzullo had two base hits and an RBI. Daly went 2-for-4 and scored four runs while McKenna scored twice and had an RBI.
First-year
Jack Kinsey picked up his third win on the mound, racking up six strikeouts and one walk while only allowing three hits in six shutout innings.
Game 2: McDaniel 13, Notre Dame (MD) 2
Mezzullo knocked in the first run of game two on an RBI-ground out in the first inning. The Gators scored their first runs of the day in the third, taking a 2-1 lead on an RBI-double and a sacrifice fly.
McDaniel broke through in the fourth inning with a nine-run frame to pull away. Daly tied the game at 2-2 on an RBI-single and a two-run double from Davis gave the Green Terror the lead, 4-2. Two more runs crossed home plate before sophomore
Cameron Simon hit a bases-loaded three-run double to make the score 9-2. Junior
Kevin Hyde capped off the inning with an RBI-single to score Simon.
Davis homered to right field to lead off the fifth inning for his second homer of the day, and Morin followed with a two-run triple to score Mezzullo and sophomore
Henry Novario for a 13-2 lead that would hold as the final score in seven innings.
Davis concluded a strong day at the plate with a 3-for-5 showing in game two, collecting three RBIs and two runs to finish with eight RBIs on the day. Mezzullo had three hits in four at-bats with two RBIs while Morin had a hit, a run and two RBIs. Simon went 1-for-2 with three RBIs while Hyde had a three-hit day as the designated hitter.
Sophomore
Kurtis MacKenzie picked up his first win of the season in relief, striking out two batters and allowing only three hits in 2.1 scoreless frames.
The Green Terror travel to Wilson on Tuesday in a non-conference midweek contest. First pitch is slated for 3 pm.
