WESTMINSTER, Md. - A five-goal second quarter carried Haverford to a 10-5 win over the McDaniel College men's lacrosse team on Saturday at Gill Stadium in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.
Junior
Gabe Wallman led the Green Terror (5-5, 0-1 CC) with 17 saves, his eight game in 10 starts this season with at least 10 and three shy of his season high.
First-year
Alex Salerni scored twice while junior
Aidan Skelly also had two points with one goal and one assist.
The Fords (7-2, 1-0 CC) totaled 50 shots, including 32 in the first half as they built a 7-2 halftime lead. They out-shot McDaniel 18-2 in the second quarter and won 6-of-7 face-offs.
After Skelly tied the game for the second time at 2-2, the visitors scored the final five goals of the half, including three from Reid Tietjen and two from Will Weinstein.
Weinstein then netted the first goal of the second half, completing the natural hat-trick with three consecutive goals just 39 seconds into the third quarter as Haverford took its largest lead of the game, 8-2.
Tietjen and and Weinstein combined to score seven of the team's nine points during a 6-0 run that saw the visitors take its six-goal lead.
The Green Terror responded with the game's next three goals, including two from Salerni and one from junior
Cash Stanton, to cut their deficit to three, 8-5 with 12:01 left in the fourth.
However, that would be as close as McDaniel could get as the Fords won all five face-offs in the quarter and scored the final two goals despite being out-shot 11-7 and committing five turnovers.
The Green Terror tied a season-low with just 10 turnovers, but Haverford won 15-of-19 face-offs and was 2-for-5 on extra-man opportunities.
McDaniel plays the first of back-to-back road games on Wednesday when it heads 2025 national runner-up and 11th-ranked Dickinson. Face-off is at 4 p.m.
