Cerone’s Career Day Leads Baseball in Win Over Mt. Aloysius

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Anthony Cerone had a career-high four hits and four RBIs to lead the McDaniel College baseball team in a 14-10 win over Mount Aloysius at the Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach on Saturday.

The Green Terror (8-5) won their spring break opener for the first time since Mar. 10, 2023, avenging a trip-opening defeat to the Mounties (5-6) from last season.

Cerone laced a two-run single in the first inning to give McDaniel an early 3-0 lead. After the Mounties tied the game with a three-run homer in the second, the Green Terror took the lead back with two runs in the third, scoring sophomore Cameron Simon following a hit-by-pitch and sophomore Austin Sealing on a fielder's choice to go ahead 5-3.

An RBI-single from junior Ethan Haddock in the fourth scored Cerone to make the score 6-3, but an RBI double from Mount Aloysius in the fifth cut the lead to two. The Mounties then regained the lead in the sixth with a three-run frame, moving ahead 7-6.

The lead changed hands again in the seventh as the Green Terror plated four runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Cerone and a two-run single from Simon. Four more runs came across to score in the eighth for McDaniel, led by an RBI-single from sophomore Thomas Mezzullo to score graduate student Shane Daly, to end the frame with a 14-8 cushion. Mount Aloysius bashed a two-run homer in the ninth but could not complete the comeback.

Cerone finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored while senior Ben Davis, Mezzullo and Haddock all had three hits at the plate. Simon went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and three walks and junior Shea McKenna had a 2-for-5 line with three runs scored. Sealing recorded the third multi-hit game of his career.

First-Year Chase Shepard got the start and the win, pitching five innings while striking out six and allowing 11 hits and four earned runs with no walks. Junior Jake Young totaled three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief work.

The Green Terror continue competition at the Ripken Experience tomorrow when they face Western Connecticut State in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 9 am.
