Ben Davis finished with four hits and five RBIs on the day as the McDaniel College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Western Connecticut State at the Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach on Sunday.
The Green Terror (10-5) improved to 3-0 on their spring break trip with the sweep, stretching the team's winning streak to four. A two-RBI performance from junior
Shea McKenna led to a 5-1 victory in game one.
Game 1: McDaniel 5, Western Connecticut State 1
McDaniel struck first in the opener on an RBI-single from sophomore
Anthony Cerone that scored sophomore
Thomas Mezzullo in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. The Wolves (4-3) tied the game in the fourth by scoring on a wild pitch but the Green Terror answered in the fifth with a four-run frame. McKenna delivered an RBI-single that scored senior
Kyle Carl and sophomore
Henry Novario after advancing to second on the throw. Mezzullo then reached on an error, allowing McKenna and Davis to score to make it 5-1 McDaniel. The Green Terror held onto the lead for the final two innings for the win in the opener.
McKenna finished with two hits in three at-bats with two RBIs and a run scored while Mezzullo also had a two-hit day at the plate, going 2-for-3. Cerone had a hit and an RBI while Carl and sophomore
Cameron Simon also recorded base hits in the win.
First-year
Jack Kinsey pitched a complete game on the mound, throwing all seven innings while totaling four strikeouts, four walks, two hits and only one run on the board.
Game 2: McDaniel 11, Western Connecticut State 2
McKenna opened game two with an RBI-double in the first inning, scoring graduate student
Shane Daly to take an early 1-0 lead. A two-run triple from Davis in the second plated two more runs for the Green Terror as Daly and first-year
Jack Morin scored to go up 3-0.
A six-run third inning blew the game open for the Green Terror. Novario got the scoring started with an RBI-single to send home Cerone; Morin then followed with another RBI-single to score junior
Ethan Haddock. A fielder's choice allowed Novario to come home from third to increase the lead to 6-0, and a two-run single from Davis scored Morin and fellow first-year
Brayden Simpson to make the score 8-0. A sacrifice fly from Mezzullo plated the final run of the inning to put the Green Terror up by nine.
Morin knocked home another run with an RBI-single to score Haddock in the fourth, and Davis hit a ground-rule double to score Morin for an 11-0 advantage. The Wolves plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth but could not mount another scoring effort.
Davis went 3-for-4 in the late game with five RBIs and two extra-base hits. Morin also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, recording the first hits of his career in the win. Daly had a three-hit day from the leadoff spot, scoring three runs.
Junior
Ryan Buecker got the start and the win, pitching four innings and totaling five strikeouts, one walk, five hits and two earned runs. First-year
Holt Flowers struck out two batters in one inning of relief work.
The Green Terror conclude their spring break trip with a doubleheader against Centenary (NJ) on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 12 pm from the Polo Grounds.
