McDaniel Scores Four in the First in 11-2 Win Over TCNJ

WESTMINSTER, Md. - A four-run first inning propelled the McDaniel College baseball team to an 11-2 win over The College of New Jersey on Thursday on Preston Field.

The Green Terror (7-5) posted their first win in two meetings against the Lions who won the only other match-up between the two schools in Auburndale, Fla. on March 22, 2019.

TCNJ (5-6) struck early with two runs in the top of the first inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly and an RBI-single to take a 2-0 lead.

McDaniel plated four runs in the bottom of the first to swing the momentum. A lead-off double from graduate student Shane Daly led to an RBI-single from senior Ben Davis before two runs scored on a fielding error to give the Green Terror the lead. A sacrifice fly from sophomore Cameron Simon scored sophomore Thomas Mezzullo to cap the four-run first inning.

Junior Shea McKenna hit an RBI-single to center field to score junior Ethan Haddock, pushing the McDaniel lead to three, 5-2 at the end of two.

Haddock then doubled to right to score Simon and sophomore Henry Novario, increasing the lead to 7-2 after three.

Three more runs came across to score in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore Anthony Cerone and another sacrifice fly from Simon. Mezzullo later scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to provide the final margin.

Four players finished with multiple RBIs as Cerone, Novario, Simon, and Haddock all had two. Davis had a two-hit day and scored twice while McKenna went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Mezzullo had a base hit and scored three runs.

First-year Luke Wood got the start and his second win, totaling 6.0 innings and a career-high nine strikeouts while allowing just three hits. Senior Tyson Nercessian earned the save, striking out two while not allowing a hit in three scoreless innings of relief.

The Green Terror travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C for their annual Spring Break trip and will face Mount Aloysius on Saturday at The Ripken Experience. First pitch is at 3 p.m. on Crosley Field.
