Baseball Takes Down Hood 17-4 For Fourth Consecutive Win

FREDERICK, Md. – Sophomore Thomas Mezzullo had three hits in five at-bats with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the McDaniel College baseball team to a 17-4 road win over Hood on Sunday at Frederick Community College.

The win was the fourth-in-a-row for the Green Terror (4-3), who have scored an average of 12 runs per game during the winning streak. It was the team's second win against a different opponent in 12 hours in games that started on different days.

The scoring began with a five-spot in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Mezzullo and RBI singles from junior Shea McKenna and sophomore Anthony Cerone. The Green Terror have scored 23 runs in the first inning of the last five games dating back to Friday's doubleheader with Lebanon Valley.

Two more runs came across in the second to make the score 7-0. RBI singles from graduate student Shane Daly and senior Ben Davis highlighted a four-run third inning to increase the Green Terror lead to 11-0. The Blazers (2-6) got on the board in the fifth, scoring on an RBI triple and an RBI groundout.

McDaniel responded to a two-run seventh for the Blazers with a three-run eighth, scoring two more in the ninth for the game's final 17-4 tally.

Mezzullo's three hits and three RBIs were both career-highs while McKenna and junior Ethan Haddock each finished with two RBIs. Davis went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three walks, scoring four runs in the win. Daly scored twice in four plate appearances while Cerone added a hit and an RBI. Sophomore Cameron Simon went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Junior Jake Young got the start and the win, collecting four strikeouts and two walks while only allowing one hit in four scoreless innings of work. Junior Kevin Hyde threw 34 pitches in relief, striking out two and allowing one hit.

The Green Terror are scheduled to return to Preston Field on Wednesday to battle Notre Dame (MD) in a midweek contest. First pitch is slated for 2:30pm.
