HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Junior
Aidan Skelly was one of three players to score three points as the McDaniel College men's lacrosse team opened the 2026 season with an 11-9 road victory over Juniata Wednesday night at Gibbel Stadium.
The Green Terror (1-0) won their third consecutive season opener and posted their third win in as many meetings against the Eagles.
First years
Cutter Stanton and
Alex Salerni scored three goals each while Skelly totaled three points with two goals and one assist. Senior
Ryan Smith had one goal, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers and sophomore
Aaron Ewing had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
In goal, junior
Gabe Wallman had 10 saves to pick up his first win at McDaniel after recording 10 in two seasons at Bridgewater.
The Green Terror scored the game's first three goals before Juniata (0-1) responded with the next two to cut its deficit to one after one.
Stanton scored the first two goals of the second quarter, including a man-up tally off an assist from Skelly, to push the visitors lead back to three with 2:11 remaining in the second. The Eagles' Sterling Bechler managed to find the back of the net with just 10 seconds left in the half, narrowing McDaniel's lead to 5-3 at halftime.
Juniata scored the first two goals of the third quarter in just 11 seconds to tie the game at 5-5 before Bechler completed his hat-trick with 12:30 left to give the Eagles their first lead.
The Green Terror tied the game for the second time with a goal from junior
Cash Stanton at 10:38, sparking a three-goal run with goals from Skelly and Salerni to put the visitors in front for good, 8-6 with 4:08 to play in the third.
Bechler scored his fourth followed by the second from Skelly as McDaniel took a 9-7 advantage into the final quarter.
Juniata pulled within one on two separate occasions in the fourth, but Smith secured a decisive goal with 1:08 remaining to secure the win.
McDaniel totaled 15 caused turnovers, the most the team has had since it also had 15 versus Swarthmore on April 21, 2018. A total of 10 players had at least one caused turnover, with five causing at least two, including Smith, Ewing, Salerni, junior
Charlie Mudd, and senior
Nate Yelle.
The Green Terror return to action next Wednesday, February 18 when they make their home debut against Randolph-Macon at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium. Face-off is at 4 p.m.
