Men’s Basketball Picks Up First Win Over Hopkins Since 2016

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Ashenafi Stuart scored a career-high 27 points to lead the McDaniel College men's basketball team to a 66-61 road win over Johns Hopkins on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Green Terror (14-8, 4-6) defeated the Blue Jays (16-6, 7-3) for the first time since Feb. 10, 2016, snapping a 17-game losing streak in the series. The win also marked the first road victory for McDaniel over Hopkins since Dec. 1, 2015.

Both teams traded baskets for the game's opening five minutes until a three-pointer from Stuart gave the visitors a 12-9 lead at the 15:31 mark. Another Stuart three with 10:09 to play grew the McDaniel lead to seven, and a layup from junior Bruce Black made the score 27-18 with 7:21 remaining in the half. The Blue Jays cut the deficit down to two with 3:35 left, with that 29-27 score holding all the way though to halftime.

The Green Terror maintained a slight edge as the second half began, but Hopkins tied the contest at 37-37 following a three-pointer at the 16:37 mark. The Blue Jays later took their first lead since the 16:29 mark of the first half when they broke a 41-41 tie with a free throw with 13:37 remaining in the game. McDaniel responded to tie the game again and regain the lead following baskets from Stuart and senior Matt Kearney. The Green Terror held a six-point lead with 7:07 to play, but Hopkins responded with two-straight three-pointers to again tie the game at 54-54. Free throws from senior David Kearney again put the visitors in front, and two baskets from Kearney and Black grew the lead back to six with 2:13 left. Clinging onto a late lead, McDaniel converted all six of its free throw attempts in the game's final 30 seconds to keep Hopkins at bay and seal the road win.

Stuart scored a game-high 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting and converting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Kearney notched 18 points and seven rebounds while Black scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds and collected three steals. Matt Kearney scored 11 points in 23 minutes off the bench, hitting 5-of-7 shots from the floor.

The Green Terror shot nearly 50 percent from the floor for the game, connecting on 26-of-53 field goals for a 49.1 percent clip. McDaniel made 5-of-7 three-pointers in the first half and knocked down 9-of-15 foul shots, all of which came in the game's final 20 minutes. 40 of the team's 66 points were scored in the paint while the Green Terror defense held Hopkins to 37.7 percent shooting from the field.

McDaniel returns home to the Gill Center on Saturday to face Dickinson in the team's final home game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 pm.
