WESTMINSTER, Md. - Haverford scored the game's lone goal with just 3:24 remaining in the second half in a 1-0 win over the McDaniel College men's soccer team on Saturday at the Soccer Complex.
The Green Terror (7-5-1, 1-5 CC) fell for just the second time in eight home games this season. They have allowed one goal or less in six of those contests.
The two teams were evenly matched as both had five corner kicks, McDaniel had five saves compared to four for the Fords, and Haverford held a slim 13-10 edge in shots.
The game was scoreless through the first 45 minutes thanks in large part to senior
Tate Roth who had five saves as the visitors held a commanding 11-1 advantage in shots. They also had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Green Terror reversed the script in the second half, taking nine shots compared to just two for the Fords (11-3-1, 3-3 CC). They also had four corner kicks, but Haverford's Grayson Benson stopped all four shots on goal.
McDaniel had the game's first opportunity to break the scoreless draught in the 77th minute when a shot by sophomore
Nicholas Clarke was saved by Benson. Five seconds later, first-year
Lucas Cross sent the rebound on net, but hit the cross bar which led to a corner kick.
On the ensuing opportunity, a header by junior
Jacob Hicks in the box was again saved by Benson. Clarke had another attempt in the 80th minute, but Benson made his fourth save in a span of six minutes to keep the tied at 0-0.
However, Haverford finally broke through in the 87th minute when leading scorer, Charles Sharp, scored his 11th goal of the season off a throw-in from Carter Kroenke.
Neither team could muster shot over the final three minutes as the Fords remained unbeaten in 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Green Terror.
McDaniel travels to Gettysburg on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff with the Bullets.
