Kearney’s 21 Leads Men’s Basketball in Road Loss at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior David Kearney scored 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting to lead the McDaniel College men's basketball team in a 79-52 road loss at Ursinus on Saturday.

Kearney's 21-point effort was his sixth 20-plus point game of the season for the Green Terror (11-6, 1-4). His eight three-point attempts set a new career-high.

Both teams traded barbs in a competitive first half that featured six lead changes and two ties. Kearney scored the first five points of the game for McDaniel as the Green Terror jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Bears (11-5, 4-1). Ursinus quickly rattled off six straight points to take its first lead of the afternoon. A three-pointer from sophomore Ashenafi Stuart gave the visitors a 20-16 lead with 4:18 to play, but the Bears would soon tie the score and end the half on a 14-3 run to take a 30-23 lead into the break.

Ursinus outscored McDaniel 49-29 in the second half to pull away. A Kearney layup just 21 seconds into the half cut the deficit to five, but three-pointers on three consecutive possessions grew the Bear lead to 13 with 14:00 to go. The Green Terror clawed back within eight at the 9:43 mark but Ursinus responded with a 17-0 run over the next four minutes to put the game away.

Kearney's 21 points led the team while junior Ryan Shaffer scored in double figures with 13 points. Stuart and senior Matt Kearney each scored seven while junior Bruce Black tied a season-high with 10 rebounds.

Ursinus forced 13 McDaniel turnovers, scoring 22 points off the giveaways. The Bears held the edge in fast break points 16-2 and points in the paint, 36-20. Ursinus held the Green Terror to 40 percent shooting from the field and 56 percent from the free throw line.

The Green Terror return to the Gill Center on Wednesday to face conference rival Gettysburg at 8 pm.
