Black, Kearney Combine for 44 Points in Home Loss to Gettysburg

WESTMINSTER, Md. — Junior Bruce Black and senior David Kearney combined to score 44 points in a 77-64 home loss for the McDaniel College men's basketball team to Gettysburg on Wednesday from the Gill Center.
 
Black converted on a season-high 11 free throws en route to 23 points in 31 minutes off the bench for the Green Terror (11-7, 1-5) while Kearney scored 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting with eight rebounds.
 
The Bullets (10-8, 5-1) opened the game on a 10-3 run and grew the lead to 16 following two free throws at the 9:18 mark of the first half. The Green Terror battled back to cut the deficit to 10 following a Kearney jumper with 37 seconds remaining in the half, but Gettysburg scored on the following possession to take a 36-24 lead into the halftime break.
 
The visitors opened the second half with an 8-0 run and earned their largest lead of the half at 21 points following a pair of foul shots at the 15:55 mark. McDaniel responded with a 5-0 run and free throws from Kearney with 12:26 to play cut the deficit to 11. The Green Terror converted seven free throws in the final five minutes of the half but couldn't complete the comeback, falling by 13 at home.
 
Black led the team with 23 points, finishing 6-of-7 from the field. Kearney added 21 points, marking his second-straight 20-point game, going 8 for 16 from the floor, and collected eight rebounds along with two steals. Sophomore Ashenafi Stuart scored 10 points while senior Matt Kearney scored seven in his first start of the season.
 
The Green Terror were unable to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit, despite scoring 40 points in the second half. The visitors' defense held the Green Terror to 44% shooting from the field while forcing 11 turnovers.
 
The next challenge for the Green Terror comes on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Lancaster, Pa. to face conference foe Franklin & Marshall. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
