WESTMINSTER, Md. – Junior
Raegan Lenz scored a season-high 17 points to lead the McDaniel College women's basketball team in a 72-56 home loss to No. 5 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday night from the Gill Center.
Lenz bested her previous high-water mark of 14 points set in the opening game of the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off against Stevenson on Nov. 7. She scored 14 points again in the following day's championship game versus Misericordia.
The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for the Green Terror (15-2, 4-2) while the Blue Jays (15-0, 6-0) kept their undefeated record intact.
An early three-pointer from sophomore
Lauren Cavoli tied the game at 9-9 with 4:20 in the first quarter, and another three from junior
Teya McConnaha less than a minute later gave McDaniel a 12-11 lead. Johns Hopkins ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to lead by nine after one, 24-15.
The Green Terror used a late 6-0 run in the second quarter to cut the deficit to four at halftime, highlighted by a layup from first year
Riley Waite with 48 seconds remaining in the half.
McDaniel kept pace with the Blue Jays into the third quarter, again erasing a 10-point Johns Hopkins lead with baskets from McConnaha and sophomore
Kendra Mason. A Mason three-pointer at the 3:25 cut the Blue Jay lead to five, and late free throws from junior
Carli Vogel made the score 49-45 at the end of three.
After a Lenz jumper with 7:50 left in the game again cut the deficit to four, the Blue Jays rattled off a 14-4 run to grow the lead into double figures. Hopkins outscored McDaniel 23-11 in the final frame to pull away for the conference win on the road.
Lenz led the team with 17 points, converting eight of 13 field goal attempts and adding six rebounds. McConnaha contributed with 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, marking her third consecutive double-double, while also recording two blocks. Cavoli impacted the game defensively, collecting three steals and dishing out a career-high three assists. Senior
Jordan McLean added six points and two steals.
The Green Terror will conclude a three-game home stand next Wednesday when conference foe Gettysburg comes to town. Tip-off is set for 6 pm.
