WASHINGTON - A 35-yard field goal by Brent Fardette III with three seconds remaining gave Catholic a 10-7 victory over the McDaniel College football team Friday night at Cardinal Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
The Green Terror (0-1)Â forced five punts, three turnovers, and had three sacks, but were hampered by 11 penalties for 100 yards. One of those penalties was a block in the back that negated a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown by first-year
Kendrick Williams with 6:08 remaining in the second quarter.
Sophomore
Jayden Booker totaled 191 yards of total offense with 135 passing and team-high 52 rushing with one touchdown. Senior
Grayson Wendel hauled in four catches for 94 yards, including a 78-yard pass from Booker down to the Catholic 1-yard line late in the third quarter. However, he also had a 44-yard reception down to the Catholic 2-yard line negated by pass interference.
McDaniel tied the game at 7-7 with 6:48 left in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Booker and the extra-point by first-year
Braden Fritz.
The Green Terror defense forced the Cardinals (0-1) into a three-and-out on their ensuing possession before Wendel's 78-yard reception gave the visitors a first-and-goal at the 1-yard line. However, a five-yard loss and three-straight incomplete passes turned the ball back over to Catholic on downs.
Following a 54-yard punt by Fritz, the Cardinals began their final drive at their own 4-yard line with 6:09 to play in regulation. Catholic drove down to the McDaniel 8-yard line before quarterback Brady McBride recovered his own fumble at the 20.
After a short pass and false start penalty, Fardette nailed the game-winner on 3rd-and-18 at the 18 to cap a 14-play, 78-yard drive to give the Cardinals their third-straight win at home in the series.
Catholic totaled 64 of its 129 yards rushing on the final drive, eating up over six minutes of clock. Chris Smith carried the ball five times for 46 yards, finishing the game with seven carries for 61 yards.
Graduate student
Malachi Murphy led the defense with 11 tackles, one interception and two pass breakups. Williams had six tackles and one interception in his collegiate debut while junior
Chris Wilson also had a pick for McDaniel. Senior
Montez Chapman Jr had four tackles and one sack.
The Green Terror make their home debut next Saturday, Sept. 13 when they host No. 7 Salisbury on Rembert Field at Gill Stadium. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
