Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss, 3-1 to Johns Hopkins

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Johns Hopkins scored less than a minute into the game and never trailed in handing the McDaniel College men's soccer team a 3-1 loss on Tuesday at the Soccer Complex.

The Green Terror (7-1-1, 1-1-1 CC), who moved into the United Soccer Coaches Region V rankings at No. 5 on Tuesday, suffered their first loss of the season and first in the last seven contests at home.

Brendan Listzwan scored on a shot from the top of the penalty box just 50 seconds into the game off an assist from Giulian Laudisa to give the Blue Jays (2-3-5, 1-0-2 CC) the early lead.

Each team had four first-half shots and one on goal as the visitors led 1-0 at halftime.

Johns Hopkins struck quick again after the break as Listzwan returned the favor to Laudisa as the Blue Jays doubled their lead just 3:36 into the second half.

Facing its largest deficit of the season after allowing multiple goals for the first time, McDaniel found the back of the net in the 55th minute when junior Mike Mevo scored for the second time this season and first since the season opener at Penn State Altoona.

Junior Charlie Olson picked up his first assist of the season and his ninth point, just one behind senior Carver Neary for the team lead. Both are tied for the team lead in goals with four.

However, Hopkins quickly halted a comeback attempt as it answered with its third goal just over two minutes later when Laudisa picked up his fourth point and second assist on the first career goal by Paul Sapilewski to push the lead back to two.

McDaniel mustered just one shot over the remaining 33 minutes as it was out-shot 8-3 in the second half.

The game featured 28 fouls and five yellow cards and was the first in the last seven decided by more than one goal.

Junior Tate Roth had one second-half save while the Blue Jays also hit the crossbar in the 47th minute. John Ghanem also had one save for the visitors.

The Green Terror return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they head to Swarthmore for a 1 p.m. kickoff with the Garnet.
