Mariya Carson tied her career-high with 15 kills to lead the McDaniel College volleyball team in a 3-1 loss at Marymount (VA) on Wednesday.
Carson tied her previous mark set on the opening night of the McDaniel Invitational, registering 15 kills in a win over North Carolina Wesleyan on Sept. 12.
The Green Terror (5-6) fell behind early in set one as the Saints opened a 10-2 lead. The lead eventually grew to 12 but McDaniel battled back with five straight points. The Saints scored the final three points of the set to win the opener, 25-17.
Both teams traded points to start the second set until a 6-0 Green Terror run put the visitors up six. Trailing 16-11, Marymount scored six straight to retake the lead while McDaniel stayed within striking distance. Carson earned two kills late to give the Green Terror a three-point advantage, and senior
Kailey Young won the set with a kill, 25-22.
A service ace from sophomore
Stephanie Buttons cut the Marymount lead to 18-15 late in the third set, but the Saints scored seven of the last eight points to take the third, 25-16. The fourth set played out in similar fashion, as a 15-12 Marymount lead turned into a match-clinching 25-14 win after the Saints scored 10 of the next 12 points to seal the win.
Carson's 15 kills on 27 attempts led the Green Terror while Young totaled seven kills and five block assists on the night. Junior
Abigayle Bowley notched five kills and three block assists while Buttons collected two kills, an ace and a team-best nine digs. Sophomore
Kaylee Comstock led the team with 16 assists while senior
Samantha Fadel totaled eight digs.
The Green Terror travel to Baltimore on Saturday to square off against host Goucher and Trinity Washington in a tri-match. The first match will begin at 10 am.
