Rodriguez Goucher Game-Winner Keeps Men's Soccer Undefeated

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior Noah Rodriguez scored his first goal of the season in the 88th minute to lift the McDaniel College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over local rival Goucher on Tuesday at the Soccer Complex.

The Green Terror (6-0-0) are now off to their best start to a season since 2019 when they won nine-straight. The win also extended the team's unbeaten streak at home to six as it has posted a 5-0-1 record since a 2-0 win over Stevenson on Oct. 16, 2024.

Rodriguez, who was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, netted his first goal of the season and the second of his career, including first game-winner. He leads the team with in assists with four and is now tied for second in points with six to set a new single-season career high.

The Gophers (3-2-2) scored first in the 17th minute when Andres Aristimuno scored off a throw-in by Declan Ritchotte. The goal was the first allowed by the McDaniel defense in six games this season, ending its shutout streak at 466:59.

The goal came on one of just two first-half shots by the visitors who led 1-0 at halftime despite being out-shot 9-2 and on the short end of a 7-0 margin in corner kicks. It also proved to be Goucher's only shot on goal.

The Green Terror, who trailed for the first time all season, could not find the equalizer until the 79th minute when junior Charlie Olson netted his team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from first-year Nicholas Clarke.

Olson is now tied with senior Carver Neary in goals with three. With two assists, Neary leads the team with eight points.

With less than five minutes remaining, Goucher recorded three consecutive shots in a span of two minutes before a yellow card on Aristimuno gave McDaniel a free kick from just outside the penalty box on a sharp right angle from about 25 yards out.

Rodriguez took the kick and bent the ball over the defense and just over the goal line inside the left post to put the Green Terror in front with 1:44 remaining.

Goucher could not mount another scoring chance and McDaniel rallied for second one-goal victory of the season and second at home. The Green Terror edged out a 1-0 win over Shenandoah in its home opener on Aug. 31.

Sophomore Tate Roth picked up sixth win of the season and 16th of his career in 25 starts.

Led by Rodriguez, senior Chase Osborn, and sophomore Trevor Grodsky, the defense has allowed just 10 shots on goal in six games this season.

McDaniel begins Centennial Conference play on Saturday at Washington College. Kickoff from Chestertown, Md., is at 7 p.m.
