WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior
Kelsey Jennings scored her first two goals of the season but a goal just over two minutes into overtime lifted Wilkes to a 3-2 win over the McDaniel College field hockey team on Saturday.
Jennings's two goals were also the first two goals of her collegiate career, including her first season of play at Alvernia. All four of her shots were on goal, converting on two of her four attempts.
The Colonels scored early on their first shot attempt of the game, taking a 1-0 lead just 4:27 into the contest. Jennings took her first shot of the day just six seconds before the end of the first quarter, resulting in a defensive save for Wilkes that kept the Green Terror off the board.
Wilkes added an insurance goal five minutes into the second quarter to pull ahead 2-0. Later in the 26
thminute, Jennings connected on an assist from sophomore
Summer Gregory to score her first career goal and cut the deficit to one.
Both teams combined for six missed shots in the third quarter until Jennings found the back of the cage again after another Colonel defensive save to tie the match at 2-2 towards the end of the quarter.
The tied score held through the fourth quarter, forcing the second overtime game of the season for McDaniel. Wilkes stayed aggressive in the extra session, taking three shots and five penalty corners while not allowing a shot for the visitors. Maddie Karp scored her fifth goal of the season two minutes into overtime to secure a 3-2 win for the Colonels.
Jennings led the attack for McDaniel with two goals on four shots while sophomore
Charley Noah added seven shots and three on goal, Gregory took two shots off the bench while sophomore
Anna Buyse also added a shot attempt. Junior
Lora Scarangello played all 60 minutes in the cage, saving six shots on 17 shots faced.
Wilkes held a 17-10 edge in penalty corners but only out-shot the Green Terror by three, 17-14. The Colonels held McDaniel without a shot attempt in overtime to seal the win.
The Green Terror return to Gill Stadium for the first time this season when they host Wilson at 7 pm on Wednesday.
