WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sophomore
Kaylee Comstock totaled 25 assists, seven service aces and five digs to lead the McDaniel College volleyball team to a 3-1 win over North Carolina Wesleyan in the McDaniel Invitational Friday night.
Comstock's seven aces set a new career high, surpassing her previous total of six first set in a match with Penn State Altoona on Sept. 6, 2024.
The Green Terror (2-3) opened the match with a quick 4-0 burst over the Battling Bishops (5-3) in the first set. McDaniel maintained a slim lead until North Carolina Wesleyan managed to draw even at 16-16. Three straight points later put the visitors up 21-18 as both teams traded three-point swings to make the score 24-24. The Battling Bishops secured the win after back-to-back Green Terror errors, taking the opener 26-24.
McDaniel again started hot in set two, jumping out to a 5-1 lead before North Carolina Wesleyan rattled off a 6-0 run to surge ahead. Both teams traded points for much of the set as the lead never expanded greater than two until the final moments. Sophomore
Stephanie Buttons earned a kill to even the score 22-22, and Comstock ended the set with consecutive service aces to tie the match, 25-22.
McDaniel opened strong again in the third set and never looked back. A 5-1 start eventually grew to a 12-point lead, but a 6-0 run by the Battling Bishops forced a Green Terror timeout. Buttons ended the rally with a kill, and first year
Mariya Carson capped off the win by earning kills for the team's final three points.
North Carolina Wesleyan took the early lead in set four, starting on a 6-3 run. McDaniel countered with a 5-0 burst highlighted by a kill for junior
Abigail May. Three straight points for the visitors tied the score before the Green Terror answered with another 3-0 run. A 15-12 McDaniel lead grew to 19-12 following another Comstock service ace, and the Green Terror fought off a late Battling Bishops rally to take the match, 25-21.
Carson compiled a career-high 15 kills to lead the team, while Buttons and senior
Kailey Young also finished with double-digit kills. Sophomore
Cassy Poteet had a career-day, setting personal bests with 18 assists and three aces. First year
Kaitlyn Saidat assisted on five blocks and senior
Samantha Fadel totaled 15 digs.
The Green Terror continue the McDaniel Invitational on Saturday with matches against Penn College and Mount Aloysius. The first match will begin at 10 am.
