FREDERICK, Md. - Three players totaled 10 or more kills for the second-straight match as the McDaniel College volleyball team played another five-set road match on Wednesday before falling to in-state rival Hood.
The Green Terror (1-3) battled in a back-and-forth opener with the Blazers. After a kill from sophomore
Stephanie Buttons tied the score 9-9, Hood used a 5-0 run to surge ahead.
McDaniel cut the deficit to one late in the set, but fell on an attack error to drop the opener 25-23.
The second set began with a 4-1 McDaniel run that eventually grew to a six-point lead for the visitors. Hood closed the gap to two midway through before two aces from senior
Samantha Fadel gave the Green Terror a five-point cushion.
A kill from first-year
Mariya Carson again put McDaniel in front by six and the Green Terror held off a small rally late to beat the Blazers, 25-19.
Hood (3-1) took a 2-1 lead in the match with a win in the third set. McDaniel erased an early deficit to pull ahead 5-4, trading leads with the Blazers until a 15-13 Green Terror advantage was countered by a 6-0 run for the home team. McDaniel rallied to tie the score before Hood scored six of the final eight points to win 25-21.
The Green Terror jumped out to an early lead in set four, but the Blazers battled back and tied the contest at 12-12. Hood held a two-point lead before McDaniel grabbed the lead with a 3-0 burst. Both teams traded points until the final moments, and a kill from Carson tied the set at 24-24.
An ace from junior
Reese Beck followed by a bad set gave the Green Terror a nail-biting 26-24 win to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
Hood took control of the fifth set early with a 4-1 run and never looked back. The Blazer lead eventually grew to nine, which would prove to be the final margin as the Blazers took the match with a 15-6 victory.
Senior
Kailey Young recorded a team-high 12 kills for the second-straight match while Buttons and Carson again recorded 10 kills. Sophomore
Kaylee Comstock added 32 assists and five aces and first-year
Kaitlyn Saidat posted a career-best four block assists.
The Green Terror begin their home slate on Friday against North Carolina Wesleyan in the McDaniel Invitational beginning at 7 p.m.
