O'Brien Nets Game-Winner in 1-0 Win Over Hornets in Home Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior Conor O'Brien netted the game's only goal with just 13 seconds remaining before halftime to lift the McDaniel college men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Shenandoah Sunday at the Soccer Complex.

The Green Terror (2-0) posted their fourth consecutive win in a home opener and extended their home unbeaten streak to four games, outscoring opponents 5-1 in those four games.

Each team registered five shots before O'Brien struck for the first time this season off an assist from senior Carver Neary. Following a long throw into the penalty box by first-year Colin Ashbarry, Neary flipped a header back over his shoulder where O'Brien gathered it and scored in the lower left corner.

It was the third career goal for O'Brien and first since a 6-0 win over Christendom at home on Oct. 5, 2022.

Holding a 1-0 lead to start the second half, McDaniel withstood a physical surge by the Hornets who held a 10-3 advantage in shots in the final 45 minutes. Junior Tate Roth totaled three of his four saves in the second half that featured seven yellow cards, five of which were on the visitors.

Shenandoah (0-2) totaled six of their 10 shots in the final nine minutes, the first two of which provided the team's best opportunity to score the equalizer. Dylan Johnson took a shot from point blank just outside the goal box that was saved by Roth before a rebound attempt by Olvin Martinez ricocheted off the left post.

The Hornets also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, including a 5-1 edge in the second half.

Eight different Green Terror combined for nine shots with O'Brien totaling two of the team's three on goal.

McDaniel begins a two-game road trip on Wednesday when it heads to Chambersburg, Pa. for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Wilson.
