Witzel, Langlo Highlight Season-Opening Shutout at Goucher

BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior Abby Witzel posted her first career multi-goal game with two tallies to lead the McDaniel College women's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout at Goucher Friday in its season opener.

The Green Terror (1-0) opened the season with a shutout for the third consecutive season and second-straight against Goucher. They beat the Gophers by the same 4-0 margin a year ago.

Witzel tied her season high in goals in just one game. She had two goals as a first-year in 2022 and two last year as a junior. Her goal in the 10th minute was also the second game-winner of her career.

Meanwhile, Mack Langlo made her first career start in goal, needing to make just one save in the sixth minute to earn her first career win and first career shutout.

Led by returning All-Centennial Conference selection, junior Alexis Keller-Posen, the McDaniel defense held the Gophers to just two shots while picking up its 50th shutout in 82 games since 2021.

In addition to back-to-back shutouts over Goucher to open the last two seasons, the Green Terror posted a 1-0 shutout over Kean to open the 2023 season in the Stockton Classic.

McDaniel maintained its 1-0 lead late into the first half until first-year Lizzie Corvera scored her first career goal with 1:19 remaining to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Witzel added her second goal 13 minutes into the second half before sophomore Alexis Castro netted her first career tally off an assist from junior Carly Brock in the 66th minute.

The Green Terror had a 33-2 advantage in shots, including a 20-1 edge in the first half. They also held 7-1 margin in corner kicks.

After missing the 2024 season due to injury, junior Sidda Mitchell totaled 62 minutes off the bench in her first action since Nov. 12, 2023 at Christopher Newport in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.

McDaniel will make its home debut on Sunday when it hosts a non-conference contest versus Rutgers-Camden at the Soccer Complex. Kick off is at noon as part of a doubleheader with the men's team who take on Shenandoah at 3:00 p.m.
