WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sophomore
Ethan Haddock recorded two base hits on the day as the McDaniel College baseball team lost 13-2 to No. 2 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday from Preston Field.
The game was rescheduled from Tuesday due to inclement weather conditions.
The Green Terror (12-15-1, 3-4) started strong defensively, turning a double play to retire the side in the first inning. But the Blue Jays (25-3, 6-1) would break through with a two-run third inning. An RBI groundout put the first run on the board, and an RBI single two batters later gave Johns Hopkins the early advantage, 2-0.
Junior
Matt Fuller began the bottom of the third by reaching base on a throwing error and advancing into scoring position on a passed ball. Senior
Shane Daly then drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs, but the Blue Jays stopped the scoring threat to maintain the lead.
McDaniel cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Quinn Dean that scored Haddock. The Blue Jays countered in the fifth with a four-run inning. An RBI single gave Johns Hopkins an insurance run, and a three-run single later in the inning made the score 6-1 midway through five.
The Green Terror sent the Blue Jays down in order to start the sixth, then cut into the lead after freshman
Henry Novario was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, making the score 6-2. Johns Hopkins escaped the bases-loaded jam to remain in front.
A seven-run seventh inning sealed the win for the visitors. A leadoff walk gave way to an RBI single to put Johns Hopkins ahead 7-2. A two-run double grew the lead to seven, and an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly gave the Blue Jays an 11-2 lead. Johns Hopkins capped off the win with a two-run home run to end the scoring.
Haddock went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Green Terror at the plate. Fuller and freshman
Thomas Mezzullo each got on base with a hit, and Mezzullo also scored a run in the loss. Daly earned two trips on the basepaths by drawing two walks in three plate appearances.
Freshman
Brady Harach got the start and the loss for McDaniel, pitching two innings and walking three Blue Jay batters while allowing two earned runs. Six Green Terror pitchers took the mound in defeat.
McDaniel travels to Baltimore on Friday to finish a home-and-home with the Blue Jays. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
