Hubinger Ties Hit Record in Home Doubleheader Against Ursinus

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Graduate Student Joey Hubinger tied the program record for career base hits as the McDaniel College baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Ursinus on Saturday from Preston Field.

Hubinger had three base hits on the day, tying the program record set by Nick Valori '17, who had 216 base hits from 2013-16.

The losses snapped a seven-game win streak at home for the Green Terror (12-14-1, 3-3). A three-run homer in the first game paved the way for a 9-2 win for Ursinus.

Ursinus 9, McDaniel 2 (Game 1)

The Bears (17-9, 4-2) broke through in the second inning with a three-run homer, then added a fourth run later in the inning on an RBI single. Ursinus tacked on another run in the third to make the score 5-0.

Hubinger put McDaniel on the board in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring junior Matt Fuller. But the Bears responded in the sixth with another RBI single to push the lead back to five. Ursinus added three more runs on RBI singles to make the score 9-1 after seven.

Junior Ben Davis hit an RBI double into center field to score sophomore Shea McKenna, but the Green Terror fell short of a comeback and dropped game one, 9-2.

Davis and Hubinger each had a hit and an RBI in the loss, while sophomore Ethan Haddock had a multi-hit day at the plate, going 2-for-4. Fuller went 1-for-4 and scored a run while sophomore Quinn Dean and freshman Henry Novario also had base hits in the game.

Sophomore Jake Young got the start and the loss for McDaniel, striking out two and walking three while allowing four earned runs. Sophomore Dominic DiBlasi pitched 3.1 innings in relief and walked three batters with one strikeout.

The Green Terror battled to a 5-5 tie with the Bears midway through game two, but a four-run ninth inning sealed a sweep for the visitors.

Ursinus 10, McDaniel 5 (Game 2)

McKenna scored the first run of game two on a sacrifice fly in the first that scored Hubinger. A two-run double in the third put Ursinus up one, and the Bears tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI groundout. Davis notched his team-leading 37th RBI on a groundout that scored McKenna, cutting the Ursinus lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning.

The Bears increased their lead to 5-2 with a two-run fifth inning. Senior Shane Daly scored on a passed ball in the bottom half of the fifth to pull the Green Terror within two.

Novario tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh on a two-run single that scored Hubinger and Dean. But the Bears responded with five runs scored across the eighth and ninth innings. An RBI single in the eighth broke the tie, and four runs in the ninth sealed the 10-5 win.

Hubinger and Davis again had strong performances at the plate, each finishing with two hits in game two. Novario went 1-for-4 with two RBIs while McKenna and Davis had one RBI each. Daly, Dean and sophomore DJ Stolba all finished with base hits in the loss.

Senior Ryan Kelly took the loss in relief, allowing four earned runs while striking out two and walking one. Freshman Maximus Mullins threw three innings as the starter, earning two strikeouts while allowing four hits and two earned runs. Junior James Cosgrove pitched three innings in relief and struck out three batters, giving up just one base hit.

The Green Terror wrap up a quick homestand with a single game against Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm from Preston Field.
