Quinn Dean had two RBIs on two hits in game one while sophomore
Ethan Haddock tallied four hits on the day to lead the McDaniel College baseball team to a doubleheader split against Muhlenberg on Saturday.
Both games were hosted by Moravian at Gillespie Field in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Green Terror (16-18-1, 7-7) opened up a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener before Muhlenberg rallied to take the win, 9-5.
Muhlenberg 9, McDaniel 5 (Game 1)
Haddock led off the second inning with a single, scoring the game's first run on a wild pitch that moved sophomore
Shea McKenna to third base. Dean added another run on a sacrifice fly, scoring McKenna and giving the Green Terror a 2-0 lead.
Haddock again laced a leadoff single into left field to start the fourth, scoring on an RBI single from Dean to grow the lead to 3-0.
The Mules (16-18, 5-8) began the rally with a five-run fifth inning, scoring two runs after a throwing error to cut the McDaniel lead to one. Muhlenberg tied the game on an RBI groundout and took the lead on a two-run single to end the fifth ahead 5-3.
Three more runs in the sixth increase the Muhlenberg lead to 8-3 at the end of six. A fielder's choice in the seventh scored sophomore
Patrick Kelly to cut the deficit in half, and a sacrifice fly in the eighth put a fifth run on the board for the Green Terror. But a final run in the bottom of the eighth sealed the win for the Mules in the opener.
Haddock had a 3-for-4 game while scoring three runs in the loss. Dean finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Kelly also had a three-hit day at the plate. Senior
Shane Daly went 2-for-4 while McKenna and junior
Ben Davis each finished the opener with a hit.
Sophomore
Dominic DiBlasi took the loss in relief, pitching two innings and striking out two batters while allowing three hits and five runs, all unearned. Freshman
Brady Harach got the start and pitched three scoreless innings, totaling four strikeouts and three walks on only one hit.
The Green Terror broke a 1-1 tie in game two with a four-run fourth, followed by a six-run sixth to earn the doubleheader split.
McDaniel 11, Muhlenberg 1 (Game 2)
Daly began game two with a single, stealing second and later scoring on a wild pitch to give McDaniel a 1-0 lead in the first. The Mules answered with an RBI single in the bottom half to tie the game 1-1 at the end of one.
Junior
Matt Fuller broke the tie in the fourth after reaching first on a fielding error, allowing freshman
Thomas Mezzullo to score from third. Haddock added an RBI single to score Dean and open up a 3-1 lead. After a pitching change, Daly earned an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Fuller and move Haddock to third. Daly again stole second and Haddock scored on a wild pitch to give the Green Terror a four-spot in the inning, leading 5-1 midway through four.
Another breakout inning in the sixth sealed the win for McDaniel. McKenna kicked off the scoring with an RBI single to score Daly. Davis scored after a throwing error, allowing McKenna to steal second and third. McKenna then scored on another wild pitch to grow the lead to 8-1. A two-run single from Fuller put 10 runs on the board; an 11
th coming on an RBI groundout from Haddock.
Fuller led the way at the plate with a two-hit, three-RBI game. McKenna had three hits in four at-bats with an RBI while Daly went 2-for-5, scoring twice in the win. Haddock added a hit, a run and a pair of RBIs while Mezzullo finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Freshman
Austin Sealing picked up the win, pitching 1.1 innings in relief of starter
Brady Bailey and tallying one strikeout with two walks and no hits allowed. Freshman
Maximus Mullins earned the save, throwing three scoreless innings.
The Green Terror begin a home-and-home with Dickinson on Tuesday, traveling to Carlisle to face the Red Devils. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
