BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior
Ben Davis tied the game with a home run in the top of the eighth, but No. 2 Johns Hopkins answered with a home run in the bottom half to regain the lead and take a 4-3 victory on Monday.
The Green Terror (14-16-1, 5-5 CC) trailed 3-0 after three before rallying to tie the game at 3-3 on one of Davis' three hits on the day and fifth home run this season.
The Blue Jays began the scoring with a two-run homer in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. They added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly.
McDaniel cut its deficit to one with two runs in the fourth. Sophomore
Shea McKenna reached base on an error, allowing freshman
Henry Novario to score the team's first run. After a pitching change for the Blue Jays, freshman
Thomas Mezzullo had an RBI-single to right center field to score Davis and make the score 3-2.
Following a McKenna single, Mezzullo hit a ground-rule double in the sixth to place two runners in scoring position. However, both runners were left stranded to end the frame.
The Green Terror set the Blue Jays down in order in the bottom of the seventh to set the stage for a dramatic eighth inning. Davis led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game, sophomore
Ethan Haddock singled to left, and Mezzullo drew a walk to place two runners on base.
Freshman
Maximus Mullins was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the inning ended on a strikeout to leave the runners on base.
Johns Hopkins (28-3, 9-1 CC) responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead back, 4-3.
Davis earned his third base hit of the day on a two-out single in the top of the ninth, but a fielder's choice ended the comeback and sealed the win for the Blue Jays.
Davis went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two runs scored. Mezzullo and graduate student
Joey Hubinger each had two hits on the day while Mezzullo had an RBI and a walk in four plate appearances.
Freshman
Preston Yost pitched 5.2 innings in relief, allowing just three hits and one earned run, but took the loss. Senior
Brady Bailey started his second game of the season, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing three earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.
McDaniel plays its fourth game in three days on Tuesday when it travels to No. 23 Gettysburg. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
