WESTMINSTER, Md. – The McDaniel College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Notre Dame (MD) on Sunday from Preston Field, scoring 34 combined runs in wins of 13-2 and 21-2.
The 21 runs scored by the Green Terror (4-5-1) in game two was the team's highest single-game run total since a 23-10 win over New England College on Mar. 15, 2023. McDaniel combined for 34 hits in the wins and eight extra base hits.
McDaniel 13, Notre Dame 2 (Game 1)
The Green Terror plated four runs in each of the first two innings. Junior
Ben Davis opened the scoring with a bases loaded walk, then sophomore
DJ Stolba smacked a two-run double down the left field line to make the score 3-0.
Stolba then tripled in the second inning to score two more runs, giving him four RBI on two extra-base hits in the first two innings. The Green Terror would plate two more runs to increase the lead to 8-0 after two innings of play.
McDaniel would bump the lead to 12-0 in the seventh thanks to a bizarre scoring play. Freshman
Thomas Mezzullo struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch, and two Green Terror runners advanced on the basepaths due to throwing errors by the Gators (2-4).
Notre Dame (MD) would finally score in the eighth but not in time to mount a comeback effort, as the Green Terror tacked on a 13
th run on a sacrifice fly to seal the 13-2 win.
Six McDaniel batters had multiple base hits in the win, led by Stolba's 4-for-6 showing with four RBI. Senior
Shane Daly collected three hits and score three runs while junior
Matt Fuller went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore
Shea McKenna and graduate student
Joey Hubinger each finished game one with two hits, while McKenna collected two RBI.
Freshman
Austin Sealing earned his first career win after pitching three scoreless innings, allowing no base hits and only one walk on 43 pitches. Sophomore
Coen Harvey pitched two innings in relief and struck out two batters.
McDaniel 21, Notre Dame 2 (Gsme 2)
An 11-run fifth inning was the highlight of a dominant 21-run effort in game two for the Green Terror.
The Gators scored first on a fielder's choice in the second inning, but McDaniel quickly responded with six unanswered runs, five of which were scored in the fourth. Freshman
Cameron Simon scored on a fourth inning balk, moving McKenna over to third. Hubinger followed with an RBI triple to score McKenna to make the score 5-1.
After the Gators opened the fifth inning with an RBI single, the Green Terror scored 11 runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Simon. Juniors
Kyle Carl and
Todd Calhoun each hit two-run singles in the inning. McDaniel would add four more runs in the sixth to reach the 20-run mark for the first time this season.
Simon finished game two 4-for-4 with eight RBI to lead the Green Terror. Freshman
Henry Novario also had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Calhoun went 2-for-4 and scored a team-high five runs while Hubinger collected two RBI as the designated hitter.
Senior
Brady Bailey earned the win, pitching four innings and striking out two while walking five. Five Green Terror pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts in the game with seven walks and only a single earned run on the board.
McDaniel hits the road on Tuesday for a midweek clash at No. 7 Salisbury. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
