SALISBURY, Md. - A three-run fifth inning proved to be the difference in a come-from-behind win for No. 7 Salisbury over the McDaniel College baseball team on Tuesday from Williams Stadium.
The Green Terror (4-6-1) gave up seven unanswered runs after taking the lead on an RBI-single in the first.
Junior
Ben Davis was responsible for the lone run on the board, going 2-for-3 with an RBI-single that scored sophomore
Shea McKenna. McKenna and junior
Matt Fuller each had a base hit while sophomore
DJ Stolba and junior
Todd Calhoun each got on base with a walk.
McKenna opened the game with a lead-off double down the left field line. Three batters later, Davis singled up the middle to score McKenna and give the Green Terror a 1-0 lead in the first.
The Seagulls (8-2) responded in the bottom half to swing momentum. Two unearned runs came across the plate after a throwing error by the Green Terror advanced the runners. Salisbury added to their 2-1 lead with an RBI double in the third inning.
The Seagulls pulled away in the fifth with a three-run frame. A two-run single began the scoring for Salisbury, and the following batter hit a ground-rule double that scored another run, making the score 6-1 at the end of five.
Salisbury tacked on one final run on an RBI single in the sixth as McDaniel only reached base once in the final three innings.
Eight Green Terror pitchers took the mound during the game, with junior
Tyson Nercessian taking the loss. He allowed two runs on only one base hit, walking one and striking out one. Each pitcher saw exactly one inning of work, combining for six strikeouts and seven walks on 13 hits and seven runs allowed – only two of which were earned.
McDaniel heads to Myrtle Beach, SC for a five-day trip at The Ripken Experience on Mar. 15. The Green Terror will face Mount Aloysius in the opener at 12:30 pm.
