Comeback Falls Short for Baseball in Spring Break Opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A four-run comeback attempt by the McDaniel College baseball team fell short after Mount Aloysius scored two runs in the eighth inning to win 6-4.

The Green Terror (4-7-1) lose their opening game at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Sophomore Ethan Haddock led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk in his first game back from injury. Sophomore DJ Stolba collected three hits in four at-bats and scored two runs while freshman Anthony Cerone had a career-high three hits.

The Mounties (6-3) began the scoring in the third inning on a solo home run to left field. A bases-loaded double later in the inning scored three runs and gave Mount Aloysius a 4-0 lead after three.

Haddock started the comeback effort for McDaniel with a two-run single in the fourth to cut the lead in half, but the Green Terror stranded two runners in scoring position to end the inning.

Cerone brought McDaniel to within one in the eighth inning on an RBI double to left field, scoring Stolba. Two batters later, Haddock delivered an RBI single to score junior Todd Calhoun and tie the game, 4-4.

Mount Aloysius took the lead back on one swing after a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth. The Mounties added another run on an RBI single to end the eighth with a 6-4 lead.

The Green Terror could not respond in the ninth as Mount Aloysius closed the door on the comeback attempt.

Senior Conor Henderson took the loss for McDaniel after giving up the two deciding runs in the eighth. Freshman Kurtis MacKenzie gave up four earned runs as the starter, striking out two and walking one in 2.2 innings of work.

The Ripken Experience continues tomorrow for the Green Terror when they battle Colby-Sawyer in a Sunday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm.
