Baseball Scores 19 in Makeup Game with Colby-Sawyer

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The McDaniel College baseball team scored 19 runs on 21 hits to take down Colby-Sawyer in a makeup game at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Green Terror (5-7-1) scheduled today's contest after a doubleheader with the Chargers (1-8) was canceled yesterday due to weather.

Multiple batters had strong performances at the plate, highlighted by four hits and three RBIs from sophomore DJ Stolba. Junior Matt Fuller went 3-for-6 and had three RBIs of his own, in addition to scoring three runs. Graduate Student Joey Hubinger also had a three-RBI day on two hits while freshman Anthony Cerone hit his first career home run. Sophomore Shea McKenna had three hits in seven at-bats with two RBIs.

Both teams traded scores to begin the game, with McDaniel taking an early 3-0 lead in the second inning after a two-run double from Fuller and an RBI single from sophomore Quinn DeanThe Chargers would respond in the bottom half with a two-run homer that tied the game, 3-3.

Colby-Sawyer took the lead in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice, then added an insurance run in the fifth on a wild pitch.

Cerone turned the momentum on one swing, blasting a two-run home run to tie the game again at 5-5. The Green Terror took the lead on a bases-loaded walk; Hubinger then cleared the bases with a three-run double to put McDaniel ahead 9-5. An RBI single from Stolba completed a seven-run sixth inning for the Green Terror.

McDaniel added four more runs in the seventh to blow the game open. Fuller scored on a passed ball and McKenna ripped a two-run single to increase the lead to eight. A wild pitch sent another run in and made the score 14-5.

A Colby-Sawyer solo home run could not turn the tide as McDaniel closed the door with another multi-run inning in the ninth. Stolba singled to center field to score two more runs, followed by RBI singles from Cerone and sophomore Ethan Haddock and an RBI double from Fuller.

Sophomore Aiden Castile got the win, pitching two innings in relief while striking out four batters and walking one. Junior Tyson Nercessian went three innings as the starter and gave up three earned runs on five hits. Junior James Cosgrove struck out a career-high six batters in four innings of work out of the bullpen, only allowing one hit.

The Ripken Experience continues tomorrow for the Green Terror when they battle St, Joseph's (L.I.) in a Tuesday doubleheader. First pitch is set form 3 pm.
