Baseball Splits Spring Break Doubleheader with St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Maximus Mullins hit his first career home run in game two to help the McDaniel College baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Joseph's (L.I.) at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Green Terror (6-8-1) had an early lead in game one before the Golden Eagles (7-6) rattled off eight runs over the middle innings. McDaniel mounted a late comeback but fell just short in the loss.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) 10, McDaniel 8 (Game 1)

After the Golden Eagles got on the board with a two-run homer to start the game, McDaniel responded in the third inning with an RBI groundout from sophomore Ethan Haddock. The Green Terror would take the lead in the fourth after an RBI double from junior Ben Davis and a sacrifice fly from graduate student Joey Hubinger.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) took the lead back in the bottom half of the fourth with a three-run double, making the score 5-3. The Golden Eagles would add another run in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and three runs in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead on the Green Terror.

McDaniel received a jolt in the seventh from sophomore Shea McKenna, who smacked a bases-loaded triple to center field that scored three runs and cut the deficit to three. An RBI single from sophomore DJ Stolbalater in the inning drew McDaniel to within two. But the Green Terror couldn't finish the comeback as the Golden Eagles held on to win 10-8.

McKenna went 1-for-3 with a three-run triple and two runs scored. Seven McDaniel batters recorded a hit in game one, and four recorded an RBI. Freshman Cameron Simon scored twice and reached base with a hit and a walk.

Sophomore Jake Young took the loss for McDaniel, allowing four earned runs and five overall despite only allowing two hits to the Golden Eagles. He struck out three batters and walked four in 3.1 innings.

McDaniel 6, St. Joseph's (L.I.) 4 (Game 2)

The Golden Eagles again scored first in game two with an RBI groundout in the first inning. A three-run third inning turned the tide for the Green Terror, starting with an unearned run that tied the game after a throwing error from the pitcher. A passed ball allowed Haddock to score and an error from the shortstop scored freshman Anthony Cerone, giving McDaniel a 3-1 lead after three.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) tied the game in the fourth inning after a steal of home and a sacrifice fly. But Mullins gave McDaniel the lead back on one swing, sending a two-run blast into left field and breaking the tie, 5-3.

A sacrifice bunt put another run on the board for the Golden Eagles, who couldn't generate any more offense after the fifth inning. Hubinger added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to put the Green Terror ahead for good, 6-4.

Mullins stole the show in game two with his first career home run, part of a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Haddock and Davis also had two-hit performances while Hubinger added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Senior Ryan Kelly earned his first win of the season for McDaniel, pitching 2.0 innings of relief and allowing three runs on five hits. Freshman Brady Harach got his first career start in game two, recording six strikeouts and only allowing one earned run in three innings of work.

McDaniel wraps up The Ripken Experience with a doubleheader tomorrow against Plymouth State and Old Westbury. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am.
