Baseball Scores Nine in Eighth Inning to Rally Past Stevenson

WESTMINSTER, Md. – A nine-run eighth inning propelled the McDaniel College baseball team to a 16-6 win over Stevenson on Tuesday from Preston Field.

The Green Terror (2-3-1) overcame an early 4-0 first inning deficit, scoring 15 runs after the fifth inning. All nine batters in McDaniel's starting lineup got on base with a hit in the win.

Senior Shane Daly finished with four hits in five at-bats, collecting two RBIs and scoring three runs. Sophomore DJ Stolba led the team with three RBIs as part of a 3-for-6 day from the plate. Junior Matt Fullerhad a career day at the dish, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Juniors Ben Davis and Kyle Carl each had two RBIs to contribute to the scoring.

The Mustangs (2-6) jumped out to an early lead in the first, scoring four runs after two extra-base hits. McDaniel got on the board in the bottom half of the inning but Stevenson would maintain the lead until the fifth, when the Green Terror rallied to tie the game.

Davis sent a single down the left field line to score Daly, making the score 5-2. Fuller earned a walk with the bases loaded to score sophomore Shea McKenna, and Stolba tied the game at 5-5 after scoring Davis and junior Todd Calhoun on a two-run single.

Stevenson regained the lead in the sixth inning but McDaniel would take the lead back with two more runs in the bottom half, punctuating the win with nine runs in the eighth.

Another bases-loaded walk gave McDaniel an insurance run, making the score 8-6. Carl blasted a two-run single up the middle, and Daly followed with a two-run single of his own. An RBI triple from graduate student Joey Hubinger scored McKenna, and a single from Fuller moments later sent Hubinger home. The Green Terror tacked on two more runs before inning's end to grow their lead to 10 runs.

Junior Conor Henderson closed the door in the ninth inning, striking out the final two batters to seal the midweek win over the Mustangs.

Senior James Cosgrove earned the win out of the bullpen, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out one batter. Seven Green Terror pitchers combined for nine strikeouts and five walks throughout the contest.

McDaniel continues a seven-game homestand when Rowan comes to town on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is at 11:30 am from Preston Field.
