GALLOWAY, N.J. - Stockton scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning of game two to take both games of a doubleheader against the McDaniel College baseball team Saturday at the Stockton Baseball Field.
Junior
Ben Davis led the Green Terror (7-11-1) with five hits and five RBIs, going 5-for-9 with an RBI-double.
Stockton 7, McDaniel 4 (Game 1)
The Ospreys scored first in the second inning after a wild pitch allowed the runner to score from third. Davis tied the score in the third on an RBI single that scored sophomore
Patrick Kelly. Stockton countered with four runs in the bottom half, beginning the surge on a dropped fly ball to left field.
Sophomore
DJ Stolba grounded out to the shortstop in the fourth inning, which scored graduate student
Joey Hubinger and cut the lead to 5-2. Two more runs came into score for the Ospreys in the fifth to make the score 7-2.
Davis hit a single into center field that scored Stolba and freshman
Anthony Cerone in the ninth, again cutting the Stockton lead to three. But a fly out ended the game on the next batter and stopped the McDaniel comeback just short.
Davis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk while Cerone, Kelly and freshman
Henry Novario all collected base hits. Stolba chipped in with an RBI.
Junior
Tyson Nercessian took the loss for the Green Terror, allowing four earned runs and five total on only four base hits. Four McDaniel pitchers took the mound in game one, combing for two strikeouts and six walks.
Stockton 7, McDaniel 6 (Game 2)
The Green Terror started strong in the second game of the twin bill. Davis smacked a double down the left field line to score Hubinger, who advanced around the bases after a throwing error in the outfield. Davis broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with another RBI hit, again scoring Hubinger. Sophomore
Ethan Haddock earned an RBI on a successful bunt that scored sophomore
Shea McKenna.
McDaniel held a 3-1 lead until the sixth inning, when Stockton scored on a RBI double to left field. Two more scoreless innings set up a dramatic ninth, as the Ospreys tied the game at 4-4 after two consecutive batters were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
McDaniel regained the lead in extra innings, scoring on an RBI single from junior
Matt Fuller and adding insurance on another RBI single from junior
Todd Calhoun.
The Ospreys tied the game in the bottom half of the 10th on a two-run double, knotting the score 6-6 and setting the stage for another dramatic finish. After two Stockton batters reached base on an intentional walk and a fielder's choice, the Ospreys scored the winning run on a walk-off wild pitch, winning the game 7-6 in 10 innings.
Davis had another strong performance at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Calhoun had his first three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-5 with an RBI hit of his own. Fuller went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Haddock also had an RBI on the day, going 1-for-4. McKenna had a two-hit game and Hubinger scored twice in the loss.
Sophomore
Nate Shattuck took the loss, allowing three earned runs and one hit. Sophomore
Jake Young got the start for the Green Terror, allowing three hits and one earned run in two innings. Senior
Conor Henderson pitched two innings in relief and struck out four batters with only one walk.
The Green Terror begin a five-game home stand on Tuesday when they host Wilson for a midweek contest. First pitch is set for 3 pm from Preston Field.
