Joey Hubinger earned his 200
th career hit for the McDaniel College baseball team in a 12-5 win over Old Westbury to close The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Hubinger becomes the third player in program history to reach the 200-hit mark, joining Nick Valori '17 and Marty Windisch '16. Valori had 216 hits from 2013-16 and Windisch had 210 from 2013-16.
The Green Terror (7-9-1) again overcame an early deficit to rally against the Panthers (6-4), using a six-run seventh inning to put the game away.
Old Westbury scored on an RBI groundout and added a solo home run to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning. A bases-loaded walk increased the Panther lead to 3-0 at the end of two.
Hubinger's historic base hit was a two-run double in the third inning that cut the deficit down to one. The Panthers added another run in the fifth on a fielder's choice, but sophomore
Shea McKenna homered in the bottom half of the inning and sophomore
DJ Stolba recorded an RBI groundout to tie the game at 4-4.
Old Westbury regained the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but McDaniel would hold the Panthers scoreless for the rest of the contest. The Green Terror offense came alive in the later innings, beginning with a balk that advanced sophomore
Ethan Haddock to third base and scored junior
Todd Calhoun. Junior
Ben Davisscored Haddock on a sacrifice fly, and McDaniel closed the sixth with a 6-5 lead.
A sixth-run seventh inning proved to be the difference for the Green Terror. Sophomore
Patrick Kelly began the scoring with an RBI double that scored Stolba. Freshman
Henry Novario then stole second base, allowing Kelly to score on the throw. Now leading 8-5, McDaniel got another huge boost from McKenna, who blasted a grand slam to left center field for his second home run of the game.
The bullpen closed out the game in the ninth, as senior
Matt Speakman entered the game and got all three outs via strikeout to secure the comeback win.
McKenna's grand slam highlighted a three-hit and five-RBI performance. Haddock, Hubinger and Kelly each had two base hits while Hubinger chipped in with two RBIs. Davis and Stolba also recorded an RBI in the win.
Sophomore
Dominic DiBlasi earned the win for the Green Terror, pitching two innings in relief and allowing only one earned run. Senior
Brady Bailey got the start, striking out one batter and walking two. Freshman
Kurtis MacKenzie struck out three in three innings of work out of the bullpen.
The Green Terror head north to Galloway, NJ for a Saturday doubleheader with Stockton on Mar. 22. First pitch is set for 12 pm.
